Simu yetu is a Zantel project that aims at providing access to people living in the rural communities by working with microfinance institutions. Special numbers with special rates are set aside giving a discount of 40%.

This project involves the Microfinance institutions, which are located in those areas. These institutions give out a loan to the entrepreneurs who are Village phone operators (VPOs) of approximately US$200-250.
The loan will help them to purchase necessary equipments t establish The loan they will receive will help them buy the starting kit from Zantel. The kit provides them with a mobile phone, booster antenna, charging solution, marketing materials, training manuals and initial stock of airtime.
With this start up kit, the entrepreneur will be located in his/her remote area (of which Zantel has identified) where he/she can sell call time i.e. people will be coming and making calls, he will be getting a bigger discount from Zantel which will enable him/her to repay the loan to the MFI at same time making profit hence self employment. There is a team of people in the call centre who are assigned tasks of helping and solving problems that may arise. On top of that, they monitor the movements of the entrepreneurs so that they do not move from their locations to town otherwise it will not serve the purpose.
